Sushi Rolls

Sushi Rolls filled with any ingredients from simple vegetables to sashimi-grade fish

The secret of a good sushi roll is in the rice. Get that right and you can make sushi rolls all day every day with any other ingredients that you have available.

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cups sushi rice
  • 2/3 cup cold water
  • 2 Tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 sheets nori seaweed
  • assorted julienned ingredients

Directions

Make Sushi Vinegar

  1. Mix together rice vinegar, sugar, and salt and set aside.

Prepare the Rice

  1. Rinse rice thouroughly with hands and soak in enough water to cover rice for 30-60 minutes
  2. Drain rice and transfer to a thick pot, add water and bring to boil
  3. When it starts boiling, turn heat down to low and simmer for 10-13 minutes covered
  4. Turn off heat and leave for 10 minutes.
  5. Transfer rice to a bowl and sprinkle pre-mixed sushi vinegar over rice and cool it down quickly by fanning and stirring rice until rice has a nice sheen and is just mildly warm.

Create Sushi Roll

  1. Place nori smooth side down on bamboo mat and spread rice all over except for a 1 inch margin at the top.
  2. Add remaining ingredients gathered in a strip right before the halfway point on the rice.
  3. Slowly roll with pressure past the ingredients and the lightly roll the rest of the way.
  4. Slice roll with a sharp knife in a sawing motion, wiping blade with a wet towel as needed.
